• Yasodhara: A Novel about the Buddha’s Wife by Vanessa R. Sasson was launched at the India International Centre on Saturday 30 June 2018. The author was in conversation with writer and festival director Namita Gokhale. The discussion was followed by an interesting Q and A session between the audience and the author. Well-known writer Keki Daruwalla attended the launch, along with authors and columnists Kota Neelima and Humra Quraishi. Veteran film personality Aruna Vasudev was also present. Click here • We are pleased to announce that Speaking Tiger title The Architecture of Loss by Zainab Priya Dala has been shortlisted for the Clara Johnson Award for Women’s Literature. The winner will be awarded a sum of $1000. The award is given to the kind of works that challenge social constructs; contain groundbreaking subject matter, content, structure, and/or audiences; and exhibit excellence in language and style. The award is open to prose and poetry and all genres, including, but not limited to, fiction and nonfiction, creative nonfiction or memoir. • We are happy to share that Speaking Tiger author Easterine Kire has been awarded The Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2018 by the Sahitya Akademi, for her novel, Son of the Thundercloud. The Bal Puraskar awards will be conferred at a function on November 14, 2018. The award comprises a casket containing an engraved copper-plaque and a cheque of Rs 50,000. Son of the Thundercloud had also won the Fiction Book of the Year Award at the Tata Literature Live Festival 2017. In Son of the Thundercloud, Easterine Kire, winner of the Hindu Prize, combines lyrical storytelling with the magic and wisdom of Naga legends to produce an unforgettable, life-affirming fable. • Nayantara Sahgal, a doyenne amongst writers, has been conferred the Lal Ded National Award 2018 by Sarhad, a social organization dedicated to building bridges amongst people in the border areas of India. Instituted in 2015, the Lal Ded Award for outstanding contribution to the nation in any field, is named after the Kashmiri poet, saint and mystic, Lal Ded. This year, the organisation has unanimously decided to confer the award on Nayantara Sahgal, for her 'exemplary contribution to the nation and especially literature and social awareness.' The award carries a prize of Rs. 1,01,000 and a memento. It will be presented to Nayantara Sahgal on 5 September 2018, in Srinagar, by the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir. • Speaking Tiger author Mridula Garg was in conversation with Speaking Tiger publisher and editor Ravi Singh about her new book The Last Email at the Kalinga Literary Festival on 9 June 2018. |
